In order to preserve the wealth of the surface land, natural resources
like soil & water and to prevent premature siltation of reservoirs
CSS of the river valley project scheme was initiated in Karnataka
during the IIIrd five year plan in the catchments of Tungabhadra,
Nijamsagar & Nagarjunasagar
The scheme was started during 1963-64 and in operation in 101 selected
watersheds in the districts of Davanagere, Haveri, Koppal, Chitradurga,
Raichur, Chickmagalur, Belgaum, Gulbarga, Gadag, Bagalakote, Bijapur
and Dharwad.
During 2005-06 it was planned to develop an area of 26,000 hectares
with an outlay of Rupees 1300 lakhs, against which an area of 4296
hectares was developed by incurring Rupees 177.61 lakhs.
